What the Black Streaks on Your Roof Really Are
Black roof stains and streaks are caused by a hardy blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. The wind carries its spores, which is why so many houses in the same neighborhood end up with it.
It only takes one spore to take hold on a shingle. The algae feeds on the limestone in your shingles, then multiplies and spreads. Moss and lichen move in behind it and hold moisture against the roof.
Left alone, it ruins the health of your shingles and leads to an early replacement.

What causes the black streaks on my roof?

Do I need a new roof, or can it be cleaned?
Most stained roofs just need cleaning. We had a customer who thought they had to replace their roof before they could sell their house. We cleaned it instead, and the house sold two days later, saving them several thousand dollars. Call us at (501) 442-3100 and we'll tell you what your roof needs.
Will you pressure wash my roof?
No. Never let anyone pressure wash your shingles. High pressure knocks off the granules your roof needs and can damage siding, gutters, soffits and landscaping. We use a no/low-pressure soft wash that kills the algae, moss, mold and lichen, then rinse gently.
Is the cleaning solution safe for my plants and pets?
Yes. Our cleaning methods and solutions are environmentally safe for your family, plants, animals and exterior finish. The algaecide we use is mixed on site specifically to kill and remove algae, moss, mold and lichen.
How long until the moss and lichen are gone?
Black algae stains come off right away in the rinse. Moss and lichen die within minutes of treatment and turn a whitish color, but they need a few days of dwell time before they rinse off the roof completely.
Can you keep the stains from coming back?
Yes. We are an authorized Roof-A-Cide applicator. Roof-A-Cide is an EPA-approved algaecide that keeps a roof clean for up to two years, and when it is reapplied every two years it is guaranteed to keep the stains from returning.
